On the Flap[]

It began for the Losers on a day in June of 1958, the day school let out for the summer. That was the day Henry Bowers carved the first letter of his name on Ben Hanscom's belly and chased him into the Barrens, the day Henry and his Neanderthal friends beat up on Stutter-ing Bill Denbrough and Eddie Kaspbrak, the day Stuttering Bill had to save Eddie from his worst asthma attack ever by riding his bike to beat the devil. It ended in August, with seven desperate children in search of a creature of unspeakable evil in the drains beneath Derry. In search of It. And somehow it ended.

Or so they thought. Then.

On a spring night in 1985 Mike Hanlon, once one of those children, makes six calls. Stan Uris, accountant. Richie "Records" Tozier, L.A disc jockey. Ben Hanscom, renowned architect. Beverly Rogan, dress designer. Eddie Kaspbrak, owner of a successful New York limousine company. And Bill Denbrough, bestselling writ-er of horror novels, Bill Denbrough who now only stutters in his dreams.

These six men and one woman have forgotten their childhoods, have forgotten the time when they were Losers
but an unremembered promise draws them back, the present begins to rhyme dreadfully with the past, and when the Losers reunite, the wheels of fate lock together and roll them toward the ultimate terror.

In the biggest and most ambitious book of his career, Stephen King gives us not only his most towering epic of horror but a surprising re-illumination of the corridor where we pass from the bright mysteries of childhood to those of maturity.

STEPHEN KING lives in Bangor, Maine, with his wife, Tabitha, and their three children, He played in a rock band when he was in high school and, as the photograph on the back of the jacket shows, can still be persuaded to take the stage now and then, as long as it's not the Richie Tozier "All-Dead" Rock Show.

Development[]

On March 21, 2022, Variety reported that the Muschiettis and Jason Fuchs are in development of and executive producing a prequel series for HBO Max titled Welcome to Derry that will take place in the 1960s before the events of It: Chapter One and will also include the origin story of Pennywise the Clown. Stephen King stated that he would not be involved in the development of the series, but was looking forward to seeing it. On June 17, 2022, the writers room was opened.

On November 09, 2022, Variety reported that Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane will serve as the co-showrunners for the series with Andy and Barbara Muschietti serving as the main show-runners.

On February 23, 2023, the series was given the greenlight and was reported that Andy Muschietti would direct multiple episodes, including the pilot, with Fuchs serving as writer.

On April 12, 2023, new plot details were revealed "Set in the 1960s, four kids in a town bordering an Air Force base with a mysterious "Special Projects" bunker search for a friend of theirs who disappeared mysteriously.".

In January 2025, Andy Muschietti revealed that three seasons are intended for the series, with the first season to be set in 1962, the second season in 1935, and the third season in 1908.

Casting[]

On April 5, 2023, it was announced Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and James Remar were cast. On April 14, 2023, it was announced that Madeleine Stowe and Stephen Rider were cast.

On June 26, 2024, Alixandra Fuchs, Kimberly Guerrero, Dorian Grey, Thomas Mitchell, BJ Harrison, Peter Outerbridge, Shane Marriott, Chad Rook, Joshua Odjick, and Morningstar Angeline were cast in recurring capacities. On July 1, 2024, Rudy Mancuso joined the cast in a recurring role.

Bill SkarsgĂ„rd’s involvement[]

On March 29, 2023, Bill SkarsgĂ„rd stated he was not involved, saying “We'll see what they come up with and what they do with it. I'm, as of now, not currently involved in it. And if someone else gets to do it, my advice would just be: do it your own, make it your own, have fun with it, you know what I mean? What I thought was so pleasurable about that character was how incredibly abstract he was”.

On May 30, 2024, it was revealed that SkarsgÄrd will reprise the role of Pennywise and executive produce the series.

Filming[]

Despite the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, principal photography began in Toronto and Port Hope on May 7, 2023 under the working title "Greetings from Fairview". It was expected to continue through December 21, but in mid-July production was suspended due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Principal photography resumed on January 22, 2024, and ended on August 2, 2024. School based scenes were shot at the Delta Secondary School. The first season of the series will consist of nine episodes, with Andy Muschietti directing the first four.
